Assisted Dying & Advanced Care Plans
At Lime Tree Surgery, we are committed to supporting patients with compassion, dignity, and respect at every stage of life, including during serious illness and at the end of life.
We recognise that some individuals may wish to explore or discuss the option of assisted dying. While assisted dying remains illegal in the UK, a proposed law to allow this for terminally ill adults has recently passed the House of Commons (June 2025) and is currently under review in the House of Lords. If eventually enacted, the law is not expected to come into effect until at least 2029. Until then, assisted dying is not available as a legal option in the UK.
Regardless of changes in legislation, we remain focused on ensuring that our patients receive personalised, high-quality care that aligns with their values and wishes. We encourage Advance Care Planning (ACP) as a vital part of this process. ACP allows individuals to make informed choices about their future care, including:
- Documenting treatment preferences
- Appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney
- Creating an Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment
- Discussing preferred place of care and death
Our clinical team is available to guide you through these conversations with sensitivity and support. If you would like to discuss Advance Care Planning or have questions about end-of-life care, please contact the surgery to arrange a confidential appointment.
